Hair and scalp feeling dry? Wondering what to use after your shampoo bar for some conditioning? The answer is quite simple... apple cider vinegar (ACV). ACV has been used for centuries as a conditioner due to the fact that it removes build-up and residue from the hair shaft and closes the cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer on the hair shaft that protects it. It is made up of long scales that lie along the surface of the hair, when your hair has a shiny and smooth appearance the cuticle is unbroken and lying flat. Dull and lifeless hair means the cuticles are open and it is prone to being coarse and brittle with breakage. ACV also helps with a variety of scalp issues as it increases blood circulation and kills fungus and bacteria that clog the hair follicles.
Start by combining in a spray or squeeze bottle:
- One cup of water - 3 tablespoons of ACV (you can use less if you are like me and absolutely hate the smell of it) - 1 tablespoon of honey - 1 teaspoon of your favourite essential oil
Shake well to combine. Generously apply the mixture to the hair and scalp and leave on for at least 10 minutes before washing off with shampoo. Reapply again after shampooing and rinse out as normal. Always shake the bottle prior to using.
